Thiago Almada

Manchester United have emerged as the leading candidate to sign Thiago Almada from Velez Sarsfield, according to reports.

Almada is one of the most promising wingers in South America, having scored nine goals in 43 appearances in the Argentine top flight since his debut in 2018.

He appears to be destined for a move to Europe at some point soon in his career. Indeed, even this summer he was linked with Premier League sides – including United.

Leeds were also tipped to be a contender for the teenager. He even admitted he would like to work under Marcelo Bielsa, but perhaps wasn’t quite ready to leave Velez Sarsfield.

Since then, Arsenal have also been suggested as a potential suitor for Almada. However, his future could be at Man Utd instead.

According to Todo Fichajes, United are in pole position for the 19-year-old. A deal could even be possible in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have been keen to strengthen their attacking options in recent months. They failed to sign top target Jadon Sancho in the summer, but secured deals for young wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.

Almada could be another one to arrive to give them another dimension out wide. He can also play as a midfielder.

Negotiations for Almada ‘well advanced’

In fact, the report claims negotiations with Velez Sarsfield are “well advanced”. Now, conditions for the move are “finally close” after United failed to sign him in the summer.

With United firmly in front in the race to sign him, they will be hoping to make progress “in the coming weeks”.

Previous reports have indicated that Velez Sarsfield value Almada at more than €20m. Indeed, he now has a release clause worth €25m.

The 19-year-old still has a contract until 2023 with the Argentine club. Hence, United will have to spend a decent fee if they are to lure him to Europe.
