Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette will be allowed to leave the club this summer if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League, according to a report.
Lacazette, who moved to The Emirates from Lyon in a £52million deal in 2017, has just over two years remaining on his contract in North London.
The 28-year-old’s future has been the subject of continued speculation in recent months, with one report claiming that the Frenchman is one of four Arsenal players facing the axe at the end of the season.
Arsenal have been in talks with Lacazette for a while about extending his terms but according to The Times, an agreement between club and player has been reached.
The newspaper says that if Champions League football does not return to The Emirates next season, the striker will be allowed to seek a move elsewhere to fulfill his ambition of playing at the highest level.
Arsenal sit ninth in the Premier League table, seven points off fourth-placed Chelsea, but Manchester City‘s impending European ban means the Gunners can finish fifth and still qualify for the competition.
As such, The Times says that talks with Lacazette have been put on the backburner as Arsenal look to climb up the table, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future a more pressing concern.
Aubameyang, who moved level with Jamie Vardy at the top of the Premier League’s scoring charts on Sunday, has only one year remaining on his deal.
The newspaper claims that the Gabon international had called off discussions with Arsenal while former boss Unai Emery was at the helm amid concerns over the club’s direction and transfer policy.
However, it is said that Mikel Arteta has since been trying to convince the 30-year-old to stay, given that the Gunners are the only side in Europe’s top five leagues still unbeaten in 2020.
As for Arsenal’s potential options behind Lacazette and Aubameyang, 20-year-old Eddie Nketiah has made a blistering return to North London and scored in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Everton.
In other news, Arsenal are reportedly keen to activate the release clause in Getafe winger Marc Cucurella’s contract.
It comes following speculation over the future of Bukayo Saka, 18, at the club.
