Fast-track Alisson recovery lifts Liverpool gloom as return date is set

Goalkeeper Alisson is reportedly back in training and could return to the Liverpool first-team picture by the end of the month.

The 28-year-old has been sidelined since picking up a shoulder injury during training. He suffered the problem prior to the Aston Villa clash and had to watch the 7-2 thrashing from the sidelines.

Adrian was between the posts for that debacle and has started three consecutive games in the Brazilian’s absence.

An initial prognosis suggested the talented shot stopper might be out for at least six weeks. However, it appears as though the news is more encouraging and he could face West Ham United on October 31.

Reds chief Jurgen Klopp hinted at the South American’s speedy recovery prior to Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Everton.

“It’s very, very positive with Ali,” he said. “He looks really good, made big steps. I don’t have a timeframe but it looks really good.”

The Liverpool Echo are suggesting the South American is now training and has suffered no ill effects from his work. He featured in the Merseysiders’ first three top-flight games of 2020-2021, conceding four goals.

The champions won all three but have taken just one point since his injury, with Adrian conceding nine. It is clear just how important the man with 44 Brazil caps is, given the devastating news about Virgil van Dijk.

No certainty over Dutchman’s return date

Van Dijk has pulled no punches over the ACL injury suffered in a collision with Jordan Pickford. The Holland international may not play again this season, robbing Klopp of his defensive rock.

Everton’s England keeper charged out to make a reckless challenge, receiving criticism for the lunge.

With Joe Gomez and Joel Matip the only two senior recognised centre-backs, Klopp may look to strengthen in January. Brighton’s Ben White has been linked but recent reports have already poured cold water on that possible move.

It remains to be seen if Van Dijk does play again this term and it may come down to the club’s situation. Should Liverpool be challenging for honours then it might be a risk worth taking to reintroduce such an influential player. Klopp is an experienced manager, however, and would not sanction his return until he is 100 per cent.

Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday and will hope for a solid start away to Ajax.
