The 33-year-old former Italy keeper went on trial with the champions last month and is now set to put pen to paper on a short-term contract to provide cover for Asmir Begovic.
First-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out of action until December with a knee problem and Jose Mourinho revealed last month he was keen to get some competition for Begovic.
“We need a goalkeeper now, not in January,” said Mourinho in September.
Amelia made 41 appearances for Milan over a four-year period before leaving the Serie A giants in the summer of 2014.
He then joined Perugia in Serie B, but was released at the end of the campaign and is yet to find a new club.
