Barcelona legend weighs in on Liverpool Premier League title debate

Andres Iniesta admits it “must be very hard” for teams like Liverpool who are facing uncertainty over whether their efforts this season will be rewarded.

Liverpool held a 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League when action was halted in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, leaving them on the verge of a first league title in 30 years, and play has not resumed since.

In Iniesta’s native Spain, plans have been revealed to award Champions League places to the teams currently occupying the top four spots, which would cause a dilemma for Atletico Madrid, who knocked out reigning holders Liverpool in this season’s competition but are just outside the qualification places.

And former Barcelona hero and World Cup winner with Spain, Iniesta, believes it will be harsh on teams near the top of the table if they aren’t given some reward.

“I suppose there will be rules that decide one way or another in exceptional circumstances, but it’s a difficult situation,” HITC quote him as saying when asked about Liverpool’s chances of being given the Premier League title. “It must be very hard [for teams like Liverpool].

“Or a second division team on the verge of being promoted, told this season is null and void, that it doesn’t count. Or, the other way round: a team in the relegation zone is saved. Pfff. I don’t know how you resolve it.”
