Man Utd goal threat offers himself to Real Madrid as talk of exit grows

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has offered his services to Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Martial has been at Man Utd since 2015, but has had good and bad spells in that time. Last season, he scored 23 goals in 48 games – more than any of his teammates – but this term, he only has two goals to his name so far.

The Frenchman remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2024, but speculation has recently arisen that he could be on the move before then.

A report from Eurosport earlier this week claimed there was a growing belief at United that Martial would be leaving the club next summer. Now, more details have emerged.

According to Don Balon, Martial’s place in France’s squad for Euro 2020 is now at risk. Therefore, he is actively looking to leave the club – and has proposed himself to Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have been linked with Martial in the past, and could be in the market for attacking reinforcements. For example, they have been heavily linked with a bid for Kylian Mbappe.

With that in mind, a move for Martial seems unlikely. The report admits that Florentino Perez is unlikely to sanction a bid for Martial at present.

Manager Zinedine Zidane remains fond of the player, though, so it is added that Madrid could be tempted if Martial is available for a relatively cheap price.

At the age of 25, Martial needs to find a club where he can fulfil his potential in the long-term. As he enters his prime years, that may still be United. But the chances of him moving on seem to be increasing.

Martial overshadowed by Cavani

One pundit recently painted a damning picture of Martial’s current predicament at Man Utd.

Former Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov pointed to the impact of summer signing Edinson Cavani, urging Martial to copy some of his traits.

“He needs to up his game, not only him but the whole team too,” Berbatov said of Martial last week. “In the really important games he needs to shine even more.

“I’ve been surprised with how well Edinson Cavani has performed. The guy is 33 years old and he’s running around the pitch like he’s a 25-year-old, fighting for the ball, making spaces.

“The passion he had is still there and that is something that Martial needs to look at and improve on. He needs to bully defenders and get dirty from time to time.”
