Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is walking a dangerous selection tightrope with his performances this season, according to one pundit.
The Frenchman showed fantastic form towards the end of last season. Indeed, he netted six goals and laid on four others in the nine games following the coronavirus lockdown.
As such, he looked to have shrugged off the long-standing criticism over his consistency at Old Trafford. While the forward had previously shown glimpses of his talent, he had struggled to perform on a regular basis.
Despite his run of form last term, however, Martial has once again failed to show consistency. The 25-year-old has only scored one top-flight goal in 10 games. What’s more, he has missed three Premier League games through suspension.
How many chances does Anthony Martial want?” the pundit said.
“I was watching him at the end of last season and I thought the penny had dropped, he was being given the ball simply and he was getting his goals.
“But he seems to have reversed in his application and gone back to that player that frustrated a lot of people.
“If Manchester United were to be taken seriously, I think they have to come to places like Leicester City and win the game.”
United are unbeaten in eight Premier League matches, winning six games in that run. As such, they can move to within a point of leaders Liverpool if they beat Burnley in their game in hand.
But Sinclair said that the Red Devils do not have enough to mount a serious title challenge.
Man Utd cannot challenge for title
“I just don’t think they’ve got enough to really wrestle that trophy off Liverpool,” he said.
“They’re still short, for me. I think Liverpool are going to win this Premier League if this continues, unless we see a very busy transfer window and the likes of United get players in that they need.”
Winger Amad Diallo will arrive at Old Trafford from Atalanta next month. The 18-year-old agreed to sign for United in October but his lack of a work permit delayed the move.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that United are also close to signing Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo.
