Houssem Aouar will not be arriving at Arsenal on Monday after the Lyon star ruled out a move, but the Gunners are chasing Thomas Partey.
Aouar was believed to be Mikel Arteta’s top midfield target, but the 22-year-old has pledged his allegiance to the Ligue 1 side.
Lyon remained insistent that £46m was the price for Aouar and that had led to Arteta’s move for Jorginho.
Lyon apparently gave Arsenal a deadline of Friday to complete a deal for Aouar but the Gunners failed to table an offer and after a meeting with president Jean-Michel Aulas, Aouar made a decision to stay.
Aouar told Téléfoot Chaine: “Well first of all because I felt I could still bring things to this team and to the club.
“Quite simply, I wanted to continue the adventure with the club that raised me and I hope that we are quickly going to hold our heads high again.”
With that news ringing in their ears, it appears Arsenal have made another move for long-term target Partey.
Atletico have stuck to their £45m releasue clause for the holding midfielder, but Arsenal do hold some leverage with Lucas Torreira heading for the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico have refused to budge over Partey and, according to the Daily Mirror, they suggest Arsenal have abandoned that transfer too.
talkSPORT also claim that there will be no incomings at Arsenal on Monday.
Goal though suggest otherwise and claim Arsenal have made a move on Monday to get the Ghana star to England.
What’s more Partey’s PR manager posted a cryptic sand timer emoji on Twitter to further fuel speculation that Partey was on the move.

Arteta said over the weekend that the Arsenal board were fully behind his attempts to strengthen the squad.
Arteta said: “Believe me, the ownership and the board and doing everything they can to maximise the resources and make this club successful. I have 100 per cent backing for them. Whatever we can do, they are willing to do it, to support us.
“Whatever we can add of course we will do it. But we have to be realistic. The people here are supportive.
“Whoever jumps in the boat will be welcome. But we all have a very clear direction and purpose to drive our goals.”
Meanwhile, Matteo Guendouzi is undergoing a medical at Hertha Berlin
The Arsenal midfielder has fallen out of favour with Arteta after a series of disagreements and the Gunners have agreed to release him.
