Juventus have entered the race for Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey, posing a threat to Arsenal’s hopes of signing their top target.
That’s according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, who add that the Ghana international would be willing to consider the move to Serie A.
Arsenal have outlined Thomas as their top target for the summer transfer window. Mikel Arteta wants to re-shape his midfield, with doubts surrounding several of their current stars in that position.
Thomas is the man they hope can take their midfield to the next level. However, Atletico are holding out for €50m – the value of his release clause.
Arsenal would be unwilling to meet that asking price, unless they could get there by offering players as counterparts in the opposite direction.
In a further blow to Arteta’s hopes of signing Partey, it has now emerged that they are not the only interested party. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Juventus want him in Turin.
It will be a summer of change for the Serie A champions. They have already replaced coach Maurizio Sarri with Andrea Pirlo, and now several players’ futures are at risk.
Midfield is one of the main areas Juventus are looking to revamp. On Wednesday, they confirmed the departure of Blaise Matuidi (who has joined Inter Miami), after already swapping Miralem Pjanic for Arthur Melo with Barcelona.
Their re-shaping of their midfield is not finished there, though. According to Gazzetta, Pirlo wants to take Thomas Partey to the Allianz Stadium.
The Italian paper claims that Juventus see Thomas as the missing element to their midfield. Arthur will be a starter at his new club alongside Rodrigo Bentancur, and they feel Thomas would complement the duo perfectly.
Therefore, they are thinking “seriously” about making a move for the 27-year-old.
ARSENAL TURN ATTENTION TO DIAWARA?
If Juventus beat them in the race for Partey, then Arsenal do have a number of alternatives. Porto captain Danilo Pereira, for example, has not hidden his desire for a move to the Emirates Stadium.
But reports from Italy revealed earlier this week that Arsenal could also consider a move for Roma star Amadou Diawara.
The Guinea international only joined the Italian side last summer, but could move on already. According to Gazzetta, Arsenal are now considering a swap deal with Roma to sign Diawara and send Lucas Torreira back to Italy.
Torreira has endured mixed fortunes during his time at the Emirates Stadium. However, he produced his best form in a previous spell in Serie A with Sampdoria.
What’s more, with Arsenal and Roma having good relations, having found a solution for Henrikh Mkhitaryan recently, a swap could materialise.
