Arsenal ‘concerned’ and Edu prepared to cut short loan deal

Edu Mikel Arteta Arsenal TEAMtalk

Arsenal technical director Edu says the club are willing to cut short Lucas Torreira’s loan deal at Atletico Madrid.

Torreira is currently out on loan at Atletico Madrid, who are leading the way in La Liga. However, the Arsenal loanee has been on the fringes and not been able to impress Diego Simeone.

The Uruguay international has only started two games in the Spanish top flight, both in October. He has amassed just over an hour of game time since then.

Hence, there is plenty of speculation about the Arsenal man’s immediate future. His agent recently denied the idea of him cancelling his loan with Atletico.

However, there is plenty of interest in the 24-year-old and Edu says the Gunners could cut short his stay with Atletico.

“The situation is very simple. Arsenal are concerned about Torreira, his happiness, that he plays and that he is well,” Edu told AS.

“We want to know about him how he feels and, later, of course, know what Atletico thinks. For us, Lucas and his happiness is what’s more important.

“If everyone is happy, we will continue like this, if Lucas is not well, we will look for a change because there are many teams that are calling me to ask about the player’s situation.”

LaLiga rivals Valencia are understood to be one of the clubs keen on Torreira, while  Torino and Fiorentina have also been suggested as potential suitors.

Arsenal target Woodman

Meanwhile, Arsenal have identified Freddie Woodman as a potential new backup goalkeeper, according to reports.

Arsenal are on the search for a new number two after summer signing Runar Alex Runarsson failed to impress. There have been rumours that he could leave on loan to regain his confidence.

That would mean Arsenal would need fresh competition for Bernd Leno, who last season had Emiliano Martinez keeping him on his toes but is now relatively unchallenged.

Mikel Arteta has already confirmed that Arsenal are looking to address that area. There have since been rumours about a number of potential signings.

For example, Barcelona backup Neto was one option, but Ronald Koeman has warned Arsenal away. Therefore, they are having to turn their attention elsewhere.

Now, Arsenal are looking at the domestic market. According to The Sun, they could try to sign Woodman.
