Arsenal, Everton keen on defensive option with £30m release clause

Arsenal and Everton are interested in bringing Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez to the Premier League, according to reports.

Both sides strengthened their defences in the summer transfer window, the Gunners bringing in David Luiz from Chelsea and Everton loaning Djibril Sidibe from Monaco for the season.

According to the Daily Mail, however, the two clubs are monitoring Nunez’s situation, with the Spaniard struggling for game time having only made three La Liga appearances so far this term.

Bilbao head coach Gaizka Garitano has preferred Yeray Alvarez and Inigo Martinez at the back and the newspaper says that Nunez has a release clause of around £30m in his contract, which could soon be activated.

The report does not say whether Arsenal and Everton are keen on pursuing the 22-year-old in the January transfer window, but insists the two clubs are keeping a close eye on whether his situation in Spain improves.

Nunez, who made his senior Spain debut in September, initially caught the eye when helping lead his country triumph at this summer’s European Under-21 Championships.

Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has outlined why he thinks teammate Matteo Guendouzi can become a top talent.
