Arsenal fans vote on which embarrassment was Wenger’s worst

The heavy defeats to Bayern, the 8-2 loss to Man Utd, the 5-1 defeat to Tottenham, the mauling by Chelsea or the embarrassment at Bradford, Arsenal fans have voted on their worst defeat.

With their side having lost 3-1 away to West Brom on Saturday, their manager regarded an enemy, and their prospects of a top-four finish in danger, one could well imagine how tough life must be for the Gunners faithful.

The Londoners were knocked out of the Champions League in the most embarrassing fashion recently, losing 5-1 to Bayern Munich both home and away, staring up at a 10-2 aggregate scoreline.

To make things worse, previously struggling Premier League champions Leicester City went through to the quarter-final stage, reversing a deficit against Sevilla to become the only English team to move to the last eight this season.

One would think that their defeats to Bayern would be the most hurtful, but although it’s right up there, most Gunners fans consider their 8-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2010/11 season the most harrowing of encounters.

Arsenal fans: Have been calling for Wenger's head

Arsenal Supporters were asked to vote on the subject in a 90min FanVoice poll, and over 18,000 of them participated. Out of that number, 38 per cent agreed that the 8-2 scoreline was the hardest to take, while 32 per cent thought that the Bayern humbling bore the brunt of their affliction.

Of course, the 6-0 defeat to Chelsea three years ago had to be in there, and 13 per cent of the voters described it as the most painful on their end.

Coming in next, with 10 per cent of the votes, was their 5-1 (6-2 aggregate) League Cup Semi-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. And the 5-1 shocker against Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side in the 2013/14 season followed up with five per cent.

Apparently, the least disconcerting of the Gunners’ embarrassing defeats was another League Cup loss against Bradford City five years ago.

There’s still a fair amount of football left to play this season, but the way things are going, Arsenal fans shouldn’t be surprised if an upcoming result trumps their current most hurtful. Things are quite messy all-round, and it’s certainly looking like the year that they finish below Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now nine points clear, and after Saturday’s result against West Brom, Arsenal are sitting in the sixth spot on the table.

The one feeling the most heat at the moment, though, is Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman has seen a large section of the fans turn against him, and on Saturday announced that he would soon reveal whether he stays or goes.

Rumours on Sunday claimed that he will remain with the side for one more year, having come to an agreement with the board amid the speculation.

While most fans will be left very disappointed if it’s true, Wenger still has the support of many within the fan base. Just as long as he doesn’t oversee another embarrassing defeat this season, he should be able to keep them on his side.
