Arsenal leading Man Utd in race for Sunderland defensive starlet

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign highly-rated 15-year-old Logan Pye from Sunderland.

Pye has already played four times for Sunderland’s Under-18 side this season and has also been attracting interest from Manchester United – who were said to have been on the verge of bidding for the youngster over the summer.

However, a report in the Sunday Sun claims that the Gunners are now a step ahead of the Red Devils for Pye’s signature, with the player set to turn 16 in October.

The England Under-16 star, who is capable of playing as a centre-back or a full-back, cannot move until the January transfer window when he will be 16.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has already added defensive recruits in Kieran Tierney David Luiz this summer, while William Saliba will join up with the club next summer after completing his loan stint at Saint-Etienne.

Pye would be expected to go straight into Arsenal’s development programme, although United may now perk up their interest in the player again after hearing of the Gunners’ interest.
