Arsenal have been told they will have to pay £30 million if they want to buy Mykola Matviyenko from Shakhtar Donetsk in the January transfer window.

It was revealed earlier in the week that the Gunners have held discussions with the player’s agent over a move to the Emirates, with Mikel Arteta looking to strengthen his defence.

And now, according to Sky Sports, it is believed that Shakhtar have placed a hefty £30 million price tag on the head of the central defender, who is also thought to be on Manchester City’s radar.

The 23-year-old has played 14 times for the Ukranian side in the Premier Liga in 2019/20, contributing to eight clean sheets.

He also featured in all six of Shakhtar’s Champions League group stage fixtures, coming up against Manchester City – while Arteta was still working as Pep Guardiola’s assistant – twice.

The Gunners are looking to sure up what has been a leaky backline throughout the current campaign, and it appears Matviyenko, who also has 26 caps for Ukraine, is a serious option for them.

With experience of both European and international football, he could turn out to be an astute signing should a deal be completed and at a relatively young age, his best years are surely still ahead of him.

The London club have conceded 34 goals in 24 Premier League games, and have kept just just four clean sheets.

David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and others have come in for criticism due to their poor defensive record, while Calum Chambers has been ruled out for up to nine months with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Earlier in the month, the Gunners looked ready to make a move for Bayern Munich’s World Cup winning defender Jerome Boateng to try and help fix the problem, however their plans were scuppered when the Bundesliga side said he was not for sale due to their small squad size.

That meant Arsenal’s transfer chiefs were forced to search for other options, and with time running out in the current window, a move for Matviyenko could yet materialise.
