Arsenal ratings: Xhaka a 2; rest little more than Bayern’s punchbag

Mesut Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain

We slate the Arsenal performance following their 5-1 hiding to Bayern Munich with only Laurent Koscielny and Alexis Sanchez escaping major criticism.

DAVID OSPINA: Arsene Wenger stuck by his designated Champions League goalkeeper but, although not having much chance with any of the five Bayern goals, he failed to command his box despite making a couple of smart saves. 5 (out of 10)

HECTOR BELLERIN: The rapid right-back could offer very little as an attacking force as his defensive duties came under the microscope. 5

LAURENT KOSCIELNY: Had been leading his side and won them a penalty before being forced off through injury. His defence crumbled without his presence. 7

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI: Another night where the German defender was caught out on occasions, most notably as Robert Lewandowski easily climbed higher to nod Bayern back in front. 4

KIERAN GIBBS: Had his hands full against Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben, having been preferred to Nacho Monreal. 4

GRANIT XHAKA: A night to forget for the Swiss midfielder, recalled after a four-game domestic ban. Wasted possession and failed to stamp any authority on the battle in the middle of the park. 3

FRANCIS COQUELIN: A trusted recruit for Wenger but he was overrun by his Bayern counterparts and was sacrificed as Arsenal chased the tie. 4

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN: Moved back out wide and was given a role which entailed plenty of defending and he put in a shift. 6

MESUT OZIL: Another night where Arsenal’s club-record signing drifted in and out of the contest and failed to take a big game by the scruff of the neck. 4

ALEX IWOBI: Wenger put faith in the young winger, picking him over the likes of Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck, but it was not a night to remember for the Nigerian. 4

ALEXIS SANCHEZ: Scored a good goal – at the third time of asking – but his penalty was dire and he cut the image of a frustrated figure as Bayern racked up the goals. 6

SUBSTITUTES:

GABRIEL (for Koscielny, 49 mins): Although none of the goals Bayern scored after his introduction can be laid solely at his door, the Brazilian did not offer the kind of reassurance that Koscielny had done. 5

THEO WALCOTT (for Iwobi, 65 mins): The damage was already done by the time the England man was thrown on, and he did little to change the tide. 6

OLIVIER GIROUD (for Coquelin, 77 mins): A last throw of the dice from Wenger, but hardly touched the ball as Bayern dominated. 5
