Arsenal are reportedly ready to cancel the contract of another veteran star as Mikel Arteta continues his revolution at The Emirates.
The Gunners have already cancelled Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ contract, and it now looks like they could follow suit with Shkodran Mustafi.
Mustafi has played nine times in all competitions for Arteta’s men this season.
Despite that game time he is not viewed as having a long-term future in north London.
The report adds that Arteta wants the Germany international gone to free up space for new signings.
The player’s contract was due to expire in June anyway. With that in mind, it would not be a big financial loss for the Gunners.
Mustafi’s agent is currently working on a move, with reports suggesting that clubs in Italy are interested.
The centre-back arrived at the Emirates for a £36.9million fee in August 2016, but his stay has been littered by high-profile errors.
Arteta is also now blesssed with a number of centre-back options, with Rob Holding in particular impressing this season.
Gabriel Magalhaes, David Luiz, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers are also available to Arteta. William Saliba is also expected to return to the club when his Nice loan spell ends.
Gunners closing in on double deal
Meanwhile, Arsenal are in talks with PSG over a deal for Julian Draxler in what could be part of an exciting double transfer this week.
Discussions with the French club are well underway for midfielder Draxler.
The 27-year-old Germany international is out of contract in June. To that end, Arsenal are prepared to pay a small fee to get the player to London this month.
TodoFichajes report that Draxler is a favourite of Mikel Arteta and the Gunners boss has been pushing hard for the former Schalke man.
Arteta believes Draxler will give them another quality midfield option. And with Mesut Ozil’s £350,000-a-week salary off the wage bill there is wiggle room for January recruits.
Leeds have also been mentioned as suitors for the player.
Another arrival this month is widely expected to be Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard.
Arsenal have won the race to sign Odegaard on loan after beating off competition from Real Sociedad and Ajax. Read more…
