Arsenal have received an offer from Swansea City to take Folarin Balogun on loan for the rest of the season, it is claimed.

Balogun is one of the most promising youngsters to emerge from the Arsenal academy in recent years. However, his future at the club – both in the short- and long-term – is in doubt.

The attacker is out of contract at the end of the season. If he wanted to move abroad, he could start negotiations over a pre-contract agreement now.

It seems more likely that his future will remain in the English league system, though. A move to the Championship could be on the cards.

According to Football Insider, Swansea have asked for Balogun on loan. They had been close to signing Michael Obafemi from Southampton on similar terms, but an injury has now put that deal on hold.

Therefore, they are looking at alternatives, and are now targeting an ambitious raid on Arsenal to aid their promotion push.

Balogun has scored two goals from five senior appearances for Arsenal. However, he is yet to make his Premier League debut for the club.

Therefore, he needs to find more regular gametime to build on the promise he is showing. Swansea would be able to provide him with that.

What that means for his longer-term future remains unclear. There is no mention of any progress over his contract at Arsenal.

Arteta wants Balogun to extend stay

While his contract is running down, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains hopeful that he will be able to keep hold of Balogun for the foreseeable future.

Last month, he confirmed that talks over a new deal for the 19-year-old were continuing.

“We are having some discussions with the player,” Arteta said.

“He knows that we want to retain him at the club. We know the length of his contract at the moment is an issue, but we are trying to resolve it in the best possible way.

“He said to me he wants to stay at the club so hopefully we can reach an agreement and extend his contract.”
