Arsenal deploy scouts after reviving interest in Serie A midfielder

Arsenal will send scouts to watch midfielder Bryan Cristante in action for Roma this weekend, according to reports.

The Gunners are already planning ahead for next season, for what will be Mikel Arteta’s first summer in charge of the club and therefore first real opportunity to shape the squad to his liking.

According to Calciomercato, one player they are considering is Cristante, whom they are going to watch play against Lecce on Sunday.

Arsenal had their eyes on the Italian-Canadian midfielder before he moved to Roma in 2018, and could be set to revive their interest.

Cristante has only contributed one goal and two assists for Roma this season, but has been praised for his work rate and it is believed by Arsenal that his physicality would make him a good fit for the Premier League.

Previously a goal-scoring midfielder at Atalanta, he has played in a deeper position during his 18 months at Roma, although he has not become a pure defensive midfielder.

Arsenal are likely to lose Dani Ceballos at the end of the season when his loan from Real Madrid expires, while Matteo Guendouzi was reportedly the subject of a falling-out with Arteta recently.

The Frenchman returned to play 90 minutes against Olympiacos on Thursday night, but his performance did little to convince former Gunners striker Robin Van Persie.

“If you look at Xhaka, Willock, Guendouzi – they don’t really have that final ball in their locker,” said the Dutchman.

“And I do think that it sort of affects the front three in a bad way.

“The strikers always need to have that feeling ‘Oh that ball’s going to come’ and it’s not coming that often.”
