Arsenal are hoping to snatch young defender Jonathan Dinzeyi after he was released by Tottenham, according to a report.
The 20-year-old defender did not make a first team appearance for Spurs before they let him go last month. However, he could stay at a big London club, as Arsenal now want him.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal are poised to sign Dinzeyi. Aware that many of their youngsters are either stepping up into Mikel Arteta’s first team or going out on loan, they have outlined the centre-back as a reinforcement for their Under-23 side.
Dinzeyi was an England Under-18 international, and Arsenal think he is the kind of cheap addition their youth ranks need.
The Gunners are currently re-shaping their academy. Their plan is to bring in promising players who could either reach their first team eventually, or at least be sold for a profit.
With Dinzeyi arriving for free, he fits their recruitment policy perfectly.
The youngster had a trial with Championship club QPR earlier this year. However, he eventually stayed at Spurs until the end of his contract.
Now, he will make the switch across London to the Emirates Stadium – although he may have to be patient for first team chances.
Keown worries for Saliba
Meanwhile, one young defender who will be in the Arsenal first team next season is William Saliba.
The Gunners signed the 19-year-old from Saint Ettiene last summer before loaning him back to the Ligue 1 side.
He is now available for Arteta to use in the upcoming campaign. However, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown thinks there is too much pressure on Saliba.
Keown said: “Saliba was expensive, but he is also young and has not played that many professional games.
“It can’t be expected that he will walk straight into Arsenal, right into the team and be on it from the off.”
