Arsenal step up chase for Barcelona flop ahead of deadline day

Arsenal have launched a loan bid for Barcelona misfit Malcom with transfer deadline day looming, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has played just 118 minutes in La Liga this season with his one start coming in a 4-3 home loss to Real Betis.

Even on this occasion he was subbed off on 57 minutes as Ernesto Valverde continues to ignore the former Marseille star.

And The Sun claims that the Gunners asked if a loan deal for Malcom was possible during negotiations over a potential move for Denis Suarez.

Despite his failure to feature much under Valverde, the club are still understood to rate Malcom highly and don’t want to lose him permanently.

That means it ‘may open the door for a loan’ move with the Catalan giants hopeful of keeping his value up with some game time.

The report adds that the Gunners would pay Barcelona’s £50million valuation of Malcom with the winger’s long-term future still up in the air.

Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals and Barca’s Suarez have also been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, north London rivals Tottenham are also thought to interested in Malcom with Sport reporting ten days ago that negotiations with Spurs are already well underway, with the forward likely to join on loan with a compulsory purchase option at the end of the season.
