Arsenal have stepped up their interest in signing Getafe defender Djene Dakonam this summer, according to reports in Spain.
Marca claims that the Gunners have expressed a strong interest in the 27-year-old, with a view to making him one of their main signings this summer.
Djene has played a major role in Getafe’s bid to finish in the top four in LaLiga and qualify for a Champions League spot, making 32 league appearances this season.
The Togo international was convinced to stay put after being the subject of plenty of interest last season and now has a €35million (£30m) release clause in his contract.
Unai Emery is said to be a big fan of Djene’s versatility, with the player able to play centrally or at right-back, as the Arsenal chief potentially plans a revamp of a defence that has struggled of late this summer.
Failure to qualify for the Champions League will almost certainly affect Emery’s transfer budget and it is thought that Djene is viewed as more of a budget option, should not finishing in the top four or winning the Europa League actually happen.
The latter option has been boosted after the Gunners beat Valencia 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa semi-final on Thursday night, with London rivals Chelsea or Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt awaiting in the final.
