Arsenal are tracking Everton loan midfielder Andre Gomes ahead of a summer move for the Portugal international, claims a report.
ESPN ‘sources’ claim that Unai Emery has been keeping tabs on the 25-year-old Barcelona man, who has impressed in the Everton engine room.
Gomes, who signed on a season-long loan last summer, has played 28 times for Everton this term and the Goodison Park club are keen to turn the deal into a permanent one.
Barcelona appear ready to sell Gomes for a fee of around £35million – the same money they spent to lure the midfielder from Valencia in summer 2016.
The report though does state that “there has not yet been any official contact between the Gunners and Barcelona over a transfer”.
Apparently Emery is a fan of Gomes and was interested in signing him last year, but with Aaron Ramsey leaving for Juventus when his contract expires in June, he does need a midfield addition.
Arsenal director of football operations Raul Sanllehi was involved in the deal that took Gomes to Camp Nou from Valencia in 2016, and, like Emery, he is a fan of the one-goal midfielder.
Liverpool were also linked with a move to pinch Gomes from their neighbours, but Marco Silva played down the talk in December: “Nothing, zero. Why would it affect us?
“I understand maybe some clubs are linked with him, I don’t know really. But nothing changes in our way, what’s in our mind.
“When you have good players in your squad that means other clubs are looking to them as well. For me, it is a normal situation in football.
“At the right moment we have time to talk about the situation, and let’s see what we can do to keep him or not.”
