Arsenal join Tottenham in race for bargain Marseille midfielder

Arsenal have joined the race for Morgan Sanson, who has recently been linked with rivals Tottenham, according to reports.

The 25-year-old midfielder has been a key player for Marseille since joining them in January 2017. However, the Ligue 1 side have been contemplating what to do with him, as they need to raise funds.

Reports in recent months revealed that Sanson is a target for the likes of Tottenham and West Ham. But the latest update suggests he could end up at a different London club.

According to Le10 Sport, Arsenal have opened talks with Marseille for Sanson. Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his midfield, and Sanson is a player his club have tracked for a long time.

The French report says talks are underway between both clubs and the player’s entourage. However, Arsenal are yet to make a formal bid.

Marseille need to raise funds, though, so Le10 Sport expect Sanson to be on his way out.

Back in March, reports suggested that Marseille would make Sanson available for £23m. That price is £10m lower than an offer they rejected from West Ham back in 2019, but despite finishing second in Ligue 1, their situation has now changed.

Therefore, Arsenal have reignited their interest in Sanson. With the futures of Dani Ceballos, Mesut Ozil, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi all unclear, Sanson could be a cost-effective reinforcement.

The former France youth international would cost around half the price Atletico Madrid are asking for another player heavily linked with Arsenal, Thomas Partey.

The La Liga giants are refusing to entertain offers for the Ghana international unless someone meets his release clause.

Hence, if Arsenal have to move on to other targets, then they may start from Sanson. The Frenchman provided five goals and four assists from 27 Ligue 1 appearances in 2019-20.
