Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would reportedly prefer to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar if he must pick between the Frenchman and Thomas Partey.

Both players are top targets for Arteta as the Spaniard looks to revamp his midfield in the transfer window.

Reports earlier this week claimed a Gunners bid for Aouar, 22, was imminent. Indeed, more recent speculation says the club have agreed a deal with the player, although not with the club.

In any case, Lyon want at least £40million for Aouar and Atletico Madrid value Partey at around £50million. As such, Arsenal could struggle to pull off raids for both players.

According to The Guardian, Arteta would sanction a move for Aouar if given a “straight choice” between the two.

Aouar would provide Arsenal with a fantastic dose of creativity in midfield, as previously noted by Rio Ferdinand. The Frenchman scored nine goals and assisted 10 others in all competitions last term.

Partey, meanwhile, would add defensive stability by acting as a sweeper in front of Arsenal’s defence. His signing could add more defensive mettle to Arteta’s side after their recent centre-back signings.

The latest report claims that Atletico fear Arsenal will pose a threat to sign Partey until the transfer window closes.

However, Arsenal’s chances of deals for either player will rest on their ability to raise further transfer funds.

Several players are on the club’s exit shortlist and are targets for clubs across Europe.

Talk of Lucas Torreira’s exit has gained traction this week; Torino want the midfielder to return to Serie A but complications remain over the structure of a deal.

Sead Kolasinac, meanwhile, is allegedly a target for Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen and Roma. The left-back could be surplus to requirements following Kieran Tierney’s rise.

Arsenal have made progress in raising funds, however. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has moved to Aston Villa for £20million and the Gunners have agreed a deal to sign a replacement in Runar Alex Runarsson.
