Ashley Cole has named Ben Chilwell as an ideal left-back target for Chelsea, despite Brendan Rodgers saying Leicester would not be making sales in January.
England defender Chilwell has been one of the most prominent figures in Leicester’s rise to second place in the Premier League this season, leading to links with bigger clubs including Manchester United.
Given that he was reportedly a Chelsea fan in his childhood, Stamford Bridge has been tipped as a potential destination for the 22-year-old – especially with their transfer ban having been lifted.
Chelsea will be able to sign players in January after the Court of Arbitration for Sport halved their two-window transfer ban, but Leicester boss Rodgers is keen to not lose any of his players mid-season.
Cole, a man who knows a thing or two about being a successful left-back at Chelsea, says that Chilwell would be a good signing for the Blues.
“I’d love to see him here. I think he’s a quality player,” he told talkSPORT.
“I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan so yes I’d like to see him here. It’s a big decision for the club but quality-wise for sure he is good enough.
“But that depends on if he wants to leave or if Leicester will sell him – that’s something the clubs would need to talk about.
“There’s always going to be a question mark going to a bigger club, but he’s doing really, really well in terms of how he is playing with Leicester.
“He’s obviously enjoying the way Brendan plays, and the system, he’s got that licence to attack.
“In terms of quality, for sure he has the quality to be here. It’s a big decision for the club but quality wise for sure he is good enough.
“I definitely think they need to add to the squad in terms of strength in depth really. But they also have to keep going and get these younger guys some more game time, get them more experienced.”
Chelsea may be forced to go into the market for a left-back, as both of their current options in the position have been linked with exits.
First-choice Emerson Palmieri is wanted by former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri at Juventus, while Cadena Cope claim that Marcos Alonso is a target for Atletico Madrid.
