Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a January move for free-agent forward Alex Teixeira as they seek to push on in the second half of the season.
Teixeira, 31, is now unattached after leaving Chinese club Jiangsu Suning earlier this month. He joined the Far East outfit in February 2016 after Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign him the previous month.
It emerged last summer that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was the sole force behind the Merseysiders’ decision not to sign him.
Teixeira enjoyed his spell in the Chinese Super League, scoring 73 goals from 153 appearances. But it was his assist numbers that caught the eye, with 43 for the current Chinese champions.
Prior to his spell with Jiangsu, the Brazilian spent six seasons with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk. He was part of a side that won five Ukrainian Premier League titles, three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian Super Cups.
He also played many times in the Champions League and bagged 11 goals in Europe’s premier club competition.
Villa chief Dean Smith confirmed he would be bringing in a new player this month. It was though to be Marseille’s Morgan Sanson although problems over his price tag persist.
Fichajes are reporting that the Villans might now turn to Teixeira as an alternative. Although he has racked up impressive numbers during a 13-year career, he would not come without risks.
A glance at his previous clubs suggests he has not played in the most competitive leagues and figures may be misleading. However, Champions League experience might title the balance in his favour if Smith is pondering a move.
The South American is said to have plenty of suitors, with former club Shakhtar and Portuguese outfit Benfica linked. Villa will need to move quickly if they are to secure his signature before he is snapped up elsewhere.
Sanson still a target
Marseille are managed by former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas. The Portuguese tactician confirmed that Villa had bid for Sanson and labelled their offer as ‘pathetic’.
Over the weekend it was reported that club officials had upped their bid and were waiting to hear from the Ligue 1 outfit. It is not known whether the French club have accepted the revised offer but Telefoot believe they have.
There is still time to get the deal done before the window closes but Teixeira remains a viable alternative.
