Miss of the season contender ensures Aston Villa and Wolves share spoils

A miss you have to see to believe was the decisive moment as Aston Villa and Wolves had to settle for a point apiece at Villa Park.

Aston Villa carved out the game’s first opportunity, though in truth it was down to the individual brilliance of Ollie Watkins.

The striker received the ball 25 yards from goal, and unleashed a fierce drive that rattled the crossbar with Rui Patricio beaten.

The hosts struck the woodwork a second time moments later after a Bertrand Traore cross evaded the entire Wolves backline.

But luck was against them once more as the ball cannoned to safety after Ezri Konsa had steamed in unmarked at the far post.

Wolves were struggling to find a creative spark in the final third despite the posession stats remaining even.

Pedro Neto was not his usual self, while Adama Traore’s usual threat was severely restricted by Villa’s well-drilled defence.

Watkins remained the game’s biggest threat, but neither side could break the deadlock as half timeloomed.

Wolves started the second half much brighter, and fired their first shot on target after Neto turned on the afterburners.

Sprinting away from Matt Targett, the Portuguese winger fired a shot goalbound which Emiliano Martinez steered round for a corner.

Villa were then handed a major let-off when Wolves somehow spurned a glorious opportunity to take the lead.

A neat corner routine saw Conor Coady picked out at the far post. His header crashed into the post and fell to Romain Saiss who somehow scooped the ball over the empty net from one yard out.

Wolves were seeking to complete a total 180 from the first half and continued to press. Coady came close to notching what would surely be the winner after Villa failed to clear their lines from a set piece.

The ever-reliable Martinez showed why he is one of the signings of the season, however, smothering the strike and turning the effort round for a corner.

Villa came close to snatching victory in injury time, but two efforts after a corner broke down failed to break the deadlock as a 0-0 resulted.
