Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been told that he needs to “secure a contract with a more ambitious club.”
The striker finished last season as the joint-top scorer in the Premier League with 22 goals, and has also notched 20 times during the current suspended campaign.
However, the 30-year-old’s contract runs out next summer and the president of the Gabon Football Association, Pierre Alain Mounguengui, believes he should start looking for another club.
“Right now, he’s at Arsenal, and he’s won nothing here, so it’s a collective failing,” Mounguengui told ESPN.
“I don’t want to say that Arsenal aren’t ambitious, but Arsenal don’t have ambitions as high as some other clubs as far as Europe is concerned.”
Just last month, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said he wanted to keep Aubameyang “under any circumstances”, although the club need to discuss a new deal before the end of the season.
The Gabon international is a reported target for clubs including Barcelona and Inter Milan, and Mounguengui is confident that the forward will thrive if he moves on.
“If Pierre could secure a contract with a more ambitious club, he’d definitely find his place there,” Mounguengui added.
“All Gabonese people see Aubameyang at this level, where he can now end his career at a major club and, above all, beyond individual trophies, to bring home a major competition.”
Since joining Arsenal for £56m from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, Aubameyang has suffered defeats in the Europa League and League Cup finals and is yet to win a trophy with the club.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are ready to rival Arsenal for the signature of soon-to-be free agent Layvin Kurzawa, according to a report.
With the futures of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri far from certain to be at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are on the lookout for a new left-back.
Ben Chilwell appears to be their primary target, but Leicester City are driving a hard bargain by setting his price tag upwards of £80m – while Manchester City are also providing a threat to Chelsea’s attempts to sign the England man.
Therefore, 90min claim that Chelsea could turn their attention to Layvin Kurzawa, who is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season. Read more…
