Aulas begins mind games with hint over Aouar’s Arsenal feelings

Houssem Aouar Lyon

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says Houssem Aouar could begin to believe that staying in France could be his best option, amid interest from Arsenal.

With 10 days to go before the transfer window closes, Arsenal are yet to firm up their interest in the midfielder.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has reportedly identified Aouar as one of his top targets. However he is aware he must first raise funds through player sales.

Speaking to Le Progres (via beIN Sports), Aulas recognised that fact, hinting that French star Aouar could soon make up his mind.

“Financially, Arsenal are like everyone else [competing with the cost of coronavirus],” the Lyon chief said.

“And Houssem could say to himself that the best thing would be to stay with us.”

The latest comments come after Aulas expressed his confidence earlier in the month that Aouar would not be leaving.

Aulas also feels he will not lose Memphis Depay – a target for Barcelona – or striker Moussa Dembele.

He added in his most recent interview: “From the start I said that we would not lose the three players announced every day in the newspapers.

“Ten days before the end of the transfer window, none of the three have gone. And I don’t imagine that will happen. If one or two leave, they will be replaced.”

Aouar, 22 showed sensational form last season, scoring nine goals and assisting 10 others. Rio Ferdinand has previously outlined how he would be a fantastic addition to Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal relying on player sales

Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Torreira

Arsenal have transfer listed several players as they look to raise funds. TEAMtalk revealed last week how Kieran Tierney’s form has played a key role in Sead Kolasinac being told he can leave.

Midfielder Lucas Torreira is another player the Gunners are looking to offload. Atletico Madrid, Torino, Fiorentina and Roma all keen.

The Uruguayan has reportedly agreed terms with Atletico but is now considering his other options. Indeed, Fiorentina and Roma reportedly remain “in the running” for his signature.
