New suitors emerge for Aguero to set up jaw-dropping frontline

Reports in the Spanish media claim Sergio Aguero will move to Barcelona when he leaves Manchester City at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old is in the final few months of his City contract. And the Argentine ended speculation about his Etihad future by announcing he will leave the club after 10 years this summer. The race for his signature has now begun in earnest, with Tottenham and Chelsea both linked. He will turn 33 in June but still has plenty to offer at the top level.

It was thought that English fans would still be able to see the South American as he was tipped to remain in the Premier League. But, according to Todo Fichajes (via Caughtoffside), Aguero has decided to join Barca to try his luck for a second time in La Liga.

The Argentina international moved to Atletico Madrid in 2006 after netting 23 goals from 56 appearances for Independiente. He spent three seasons at Wanda Metropolitano and enhanced his reputation with 101 goals from 234 outings.

A move to City followed in 2011 and the rest is history, with Aguero now the club’s all-time record scorer. He has notched 257 for the Citizens and will look to add to that tally this term.

Pep Guardiola’s men are still fighting on four fronts and so the Buenos Aires-born legend may land even more silverware.

The veteran has struggled with injuries in 2020-2021 and has just three goals to his name. But he has proved to be a man for the big occasion and could still have a say in proceedings.

Aguero in demand

Chelsea are certainly in need of a new striker after the failure of Timo Werner to settle in England. The Germany forward has just five league goals from 29 outings and has been tipped to leave this summer.

A look ahead to the Premier League game between Man City and Leeds United, including stats on form, possession, shots, cards, corners, top scorers and previous meetings.

Signing a proven goalscorer would have been ideal for Thomas Tuchel but it may be a non-starter. A link with Spurs seemed less obvious with Harry Kane the undouted superstar in the side.

Jose Mourinho might see Aguero as an ideal man to have on the bench. But Aguero feels he can still be a starter and that may have been a problem.

Lionel Messi’s Barca future is still up in the air. There has been no change in his contract situation despite Joan Laporta’s presidential election victory.

Should he stay, it would mean the mouth-watering prospect of the two Argentina internationals lining up in the same team. That would set the pulses racing as the Catalans try to reassert their authority over the European game.
