The Gers suffered their first European defeat of the season to leave their hopes of qualifying from Group E in the balance, rivals Lyon having won 4-2 at home to Stuttgart.

Thierry Henry opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Lionel Messi then doubled the lead in the 43rd minute.

Television replays showed Henry handled the ball as he slid in to convert after Messi had headed Ronaldinho’s delivery across Allan McGregor.

But there was no debate about Messi’s goal, the Argentinian netting after Ronaldinho’s initial effort was saved.

The home side had a host of chances to increase their advantage, but a mixture of poor finishing and superb goalkeeping by McGregor kept the scoreline down.
