Barcelona confident of deal for fourth-choice target after Pogba miss

Barcelona are hoping to complete the signing of an RB Leipzig star next week after missing out on deals for a series of other targets.

The LaLiga champions have been searching the globe for a replacement for the legendary Andres Iniesta this summer, but their transfer hunt has so far drawn a blank.

Efforts to sign Paul Pogba look set to fail – that’s despite his agent Mino Raiola’s best attempts to ship him out at Manchester United – with the club needing to sell first before they could sanction the Frenchman’s likely £110m asking price.

With Pogba out of their price range, Barca have since looked at PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot and Ajax youngster Frenkie De Jong – but both deals have proved complicated.

Rabiot’s future at PSG still remains under the spotlight and with his contract due to expire next summer, he could yet move on this summer or in January should an agreement not be reached.

Ajax prodigy De Jong, meanwhile, has vowed to stay at his club for one more season despite his €50m price tag being within Barcelona’s spending prowess. The 21-year-old has stated he wants to further his big-game experience in the Champions League, with Ajax looking a good bet to reach the competition proper.

And now according to reports in Catalan-based paper Sport, Barcelona have turned their attentions to Leipzig star Kevin Kampl.

The 27-year-old is thought to be valued at around €40m and the two clubs are said to be well down the line in terms of negotiations over a deal.

Kampl, an international for Slovenia with 27 caps, has previously played for RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen – but a move to Barcelona would catapult his name into the headlines like never before.

Barcelona have already added Arthur and Arturo Vidal to their midfield ranks this summer, but a long-term replacement for Iniesta has always been one of Ernesto Valverde’s top priorities this summer. Now it seems they could finally land their man.

News of Barca’s potential capture of Kampl may only temporarily relieve Manchester United, with Barcelona set to continue monitoring the Frenchman’s situation at Old Trafford.
