Barcelona are confident of beating Liverpool to the signature of Real Betis wing-back Junior Firpo, claim reports in Spain.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new deputy to Andy Robertson at left-back after Alberto Moreno left for Villarreal on a free transfer, and Junior has been heavily linked.
The Dominican-born Spanish U21 international has a €50m release clause, but it was believed that Liverpool would open the bidding at €30m.
However, according to Marca, those efforts may not be enough, as Barcelona have now identified Junior as a priority target after giving up on free agent Filipe Luis – because they would prefer to sign a long-term successor to Jordi Alba.
Like Liverpool, Barca are also in need of depth at left-back, and despite bringing Marc Cucurella back to the club after he was sold to Eibar, it is expected that the 20-year-old will immediately be made available for transfer – hence their pursuit of Junior.
Betis have already potentially secured a replacement for Junior, as Alfonso Pedraza (who mainly operates as a winger, but can fill in at left-back) has joined on loan from Villarreal.
Junior, who has made 43 appearances in his two years with the Betis first team, is still under contract with the Seville-based club until 2023 – but Barca are prepared to tempt them into selling by including teenager Miranda in a player-plus-cash bid, say Mundo Deportivo.
