Barcelona ‘prepped’ winter deal for ‘priority’ Man City ace in summer

Raheem Sterling Riyad Mahrez TEAMtalk

Reports in Spain claim Barcelona will look to sign Manchester City star Raheem Sterling in the January transfer window having paved the way for his move during the summer.

The 26-year-old is currently in his seventh season with the Citizens having joined from Liverpool in the summer of 2015. The Etihad giants paid an initial £44m for the England winger and it was certainly money well spent. Sterling has made 297 appearances in all competitions, scoring 115 goals and helped the side win many trophies.

He has three Premier League titles on his CV already while also winning the FA Cup in 2018-2019. With four EFL Cup triumphs, the England international has taken his game to another level under Pep Guardiola.

However, rumours began to surface during the summer that all was not what it seemed. Having seen his goal return dip alarmingly last term there were reports that the Spanish tactician was having thoughts about moving him on.

The Jamaican-born star would have commanded a huge transfer fee which could have helped finance a move for Harry Kane. Neither of those things happened and the England captain remained with Tottenham.

But Sterling has been used sparingly in the early part of 2021-2022. He has made only one top-flight start and three substitute appearances.

Barca are monitoring the situation and feel they could possibly lure him to the Nou Camp in mid season. Spanish outlet Sport go as far as to suggest that talks actually took place in the summer.

They report that Bara ‘worked’ on his loan which is a ‘priority for the winter market’. Much will depend on the next few months and whether Sterling can reclaim his starting berth with the north-west outfit.

Sterling ‘open’ to Barcelona switch

The Three Lions ace is under contract with City until the summer of 2023. There have been rumours of talks taking place but no positive outcome to report.

Sport state that he would be happy to reunite with former City team-mate Sergio Aguero at the Spanish giants. Back in mid summer, The Athletic claimed that Sterling’s relationship with Guardiola had become fractious.

Pep Guardiola gesturing on the touchline

He had already been left out of the line-up for matches although the former Red did start the Champions League final. The talented wide man remains a key figure for England and was superb during their march to the Euro 2020 final.
