Barcelona are set to continue their long-term pursuit of Willian by targeting the winger on a free transfer when his contract expires at Chelsea next summer, according to reports in Spain.
The Brazilian has been a target for the La Liga giants ever since he played for Shakhtar Donetsk in 2009, while more recently they have made further bids for the player during his time at Chelsea. Last year, they went as high as an offer of €60m.
Despite the winger being used in six games by Frank Lampard this season, there is little clarity on whether he will be offered a contract extension, meaning Barcelona are waiting to pounce.
According to Catalan publication Mundo Deportivo, Willian’s expiry gives Barcelona their best chance yet of landing the player, who is available to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement from January.
However, the source admits that Barcelona are more interested in younger players, like Napoli’s central midfielder Fabian Ruiz.
Willian himself has admitted that his time at Chelsea is not finished, with the Champions League being one major target remaining on his list.
