Xabi Alonso: Extended his Bayern deal

Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has poured cold water on reports Xabi Alonso could return to Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Spain playmaker, 34, joined the Bundesliga champions in the summer of 2014 and his two-year deal is set to expire in June – but the former Real Sociedad star is free to open talks with foreign clubs from January about signing a pre-contract agreement.

Alonso has been linked with former clubs Real Mardid and Liverpool, and admitted recently that he couldn’t rule out a return to Anfield.

But Rummenigge told German newspaper Bild that Alonso will still be at the Allianz Arena next term.

“Recently, I had a talk with Xabi. He feels very good at Bayern Munich and in the city of Munich too,” Rummenigge said.

“He signalled to me he is interested in staying in Munich. Rumours he would plan to leave are wrong.”

Alonso admitted no decision has been made about his future, but suggested the could extend his deal.

“I have not made a decision yet, neither for Bayern nor against,” the midfielder said. “Even concerning the end of my career I have not set a limit.

“I am pleased about the positive signals. I am happy to be at the club.

“I can feel the respect, this is important. Now we will see what happens.”

Alonso, who remains a popular figure at Anfield, was signed for the Reds by Rafa Benitez from Real Sociedad and went on to make 210 appearances in all competitions before leaving for Real Madrid.
