Bayern expert claims David Alaba is yet to reject concrete Liverpool offer

David Alaba would prefer to join Real Madrid, but is yet to reject an offer from Liverpool, claims one journalist.

Alaba is in the final six months of his contract with Bayern, where he will not sign an extension. That makes him available to talk to clubs outside Germany from this month on.

Still in the prime of his career, there are a number of clubs queuing up for the defender. The chance to sign him for free is one that is too good to ignore.

Hence, he has been linked with a move to the Premier League. Liverpool are the main contender from England, as they need defensive reinforcements.

It is unlikely they will sign a defender in January, but injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez this term have reiterated the importance of depth. It is something they could address for next season.

Alaba would be a useful addition to the champions’ squad. Able to play as a centre-back or left-back, he would add quality to their defensive unit.

Reports recently claimed that the Austrian had reached an agreement with Real Madrid, but that was quickly denied. In the process, reminders were sent about Liverpool’s interest.

Now, Bild journalist Christian Falk has hinted that there is still a chance for Liverpool – even though Madrid still seems the more likely destination.

“It’s a classic case of not true,” Falk said of rumours that Alaba had rejected Liverpool and Chelsea.

“We had reported about their (Liverpool’s) interest and that they have also thrown a salary offer into the ring which has not yet been rejected.

“There is still no trend towards England and we hear in the club his preference is to go to Madrid, who may already be ahead of the competition and have the deal fixed or signed.

“There is a great consensus that in the end he will move there.”

With no agreement yet, though, there is time for other clubs to swoop in. For example, Barcelona could try to sign him after the outcome of their presidential election becomes clear.

While he waits for that, Alaba is putting a decision about his future on hold. His next destination may not be clear until April or May.

The 28-year-old has made more than 400 appearances for Bayern, with whom he has won nine league titles and the Champions League twice.
