European giant to welcome Tottenham star ‘with open arms’ in January

Gedson Fernandes TEAMtalk

Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has revealed that he would welcome Tottenham loanee Gedson Fernandes back to his club ‘with open arms’ in January.

The midfielder has featured in just 13 games for Spurs since arriving on an 18-month loan deal back in January. He has also failed to register a single goal or assist in that time.

So far this campaign, Gedson has played just 63 minutes of the Carabao Cup victory against Chelsea back in September.

As a result of his lack of game time, Jose Mourinho is open to allowing the youngster to return to Portugal much earlier than planned.

And it would appear that Jesus is also keen on the idea.

According to Mais Futbol (as cited by Sport Witness), Jesus said: “I don’t know Gedson very well. His two years were when I was out of Portugal.

“He was loaned to Tottenham, I don’t know why. I know he doesn’t play at Tottenham. If Benfica want him back and the player is interested in returning, I will welcome him with open arms.

“For him not to play at Tottenham and not to play at Benfica, he’d be better not playing at Benfica.”

Spurs spent just over £4m on Gedson’s loan, which appears, on the face of it, to have been a waste of money.

Mourinho appeared to work out fairly quickly that the player was not up to the physicality of English football.

It now seems certain that the best deal for both parties would be for Gedson to return home.

Spurs, United keen on Serie A star

Manchester United and Tottenham are among the clubs interested in Nikola Milenkovic, according to a report.

Milenkovic has established himself as a key player for Fiorentina, where he has made 100 appearances in Serie A since joining in 2017.

The 23-year-old seems ready for a step up to a bigger club, and reports recently suggested Tottenham could make a move for him in January.

According to La Nazione (via Inside Futbol), though, they are not the only suitors for the defender. Man Utd also remain in the hunt.

Milenkovic was regularly mentioned as a target for the Red Devils in summer 2019. Those links have faded somewhat since, but the Italian newspaper claims that option is still very much alive. Read more…
