Benitez addresses Newcastle problems after shock EFL Cup loss

Rafael Benitez told Newcastle fans they shouldn’t be worried despite their shock EFL Cup exit at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

Salomon Rondon scored his first goal for the club, but two injury time goals secured a surprise 3-1 win for Forest.

Benitez told Sky Sports: “I am disappointed. Everyone could see what happened. I didn’t like the beginning of the game – I think the team reacted well.

“We didn’t have much control but we were close, maybe we are missing the final pass to create the more clear chance. When we had the draw and we were there, everyone saw what happened.”

Newcastle managed only one shot on target in the entire game. Benitez continued: “It is a concern. We had the chances with the header in the first half and the final delivery or pass has to be better. The positive today? Rondon scored a goal so you have to have your strikers scoring goals.”

Benitez reassured supporters that the club can recover from the setback. “No, don’t be concerned. They knew at the beginning it would be a difficult start to the season so we must just keep working and carrying on.”

He reiterated his relative confidence for the future to 5Live: “I don’t agree that Forest were the better team and I’m not concerned by how we played.

“We did well to control the game after the first minute when we conceded. They were able to play on the counter attack.

“We did not create many chances so we need to improve in attack and keep working hard.

“It’s a long season, we knew it was going to be hard but we have confidence in ourselves.”

Things aren’t about to get any easier for Newcastle, who are still winless this season. They face champions Manchester City away on Saturday.
