Rafael Benitez has praised the attitude of his Newcastle players after they took the club to the brink of a new record for away wins in a season.Saturday evening’s 3-1 victory at Sky Bet Championship promotion rivals Huddersfield was their 13th on the road this season, equalling the high set by Kevin Keegan’s team during the 1992-93 campaign.

Another at Reading on Tuesday evening would not only break that club record, but also strengthen the Magpies’ grip on first place and Benitez has been delighted with the application his team has shown.

He said: “The away form was on the list of things I had to find a solution for. But when you have a team that responds to the training sessions and works hard to follow the game-plan, it’s easier to approach the games.

“We’re organised, we press and it’s a lot about effort.

“Sometimes when you are at home, you have to create and it depends on the quality. Defenders just have to clear the ball while attackers have to find a smaller target.

“Clearing the ball is easier than scoring – that’s why forwards earn more money.

“The main thing is the attitude of the players and that they keep working on the pitch.

“We have a good balance, we score goals and don’t concede too many. Keeping the ball is fine, but you have to create chances.

“It’s when you have a winning team that you get this balance of scoring and not conceding. Some teams can win scoring goals and conceding, but often they have to score a lot.

“If you want to improve anything you need to have the right attitude. To win games, you need both effort and attitude.”
