Chelsea went ahead after just four minutes when Ballack powerfully headed home Lampard’s curling free-kick following a foul on Michael Essien.

Joe Cole struck the upright minutes later as the Blues pressed for another but Deivid, who scored at both ends in the first leg, gave them a scare when he headed wide in the box.

Didier Drogba was denied on three occassions after the interval but Hilario – on for the injured Carlo Cudicini – superbly denied Gokhan Gonul and tColin Kazim-Richards within seconds of each other nine minutes from time to keep Chelsea afloat.

And they wrapped up the tie three minutes from time when Essien’s cross was turned home by Lampard from close range.
