Dortmund chief sends update to Chelsea, Man Utd about Haaland hopes
Borussia Dortmund insist that Erling Haaland is happy at the club and played down rumours that he could leave this summer.
Haaland is one of the hottest prospects in world football thanks to his blistering form in recent years. The 20-year-old has scored 43 goals in 43 games for Dortmund.
A generational talent, it seems he will be one of the world’s best players over the next decade.
Should he continue to score at the rate he is doing, it is unlikely he will stay at Dortmund. The Bundesliga club know that bigger teams will come in for him.
Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola recently fuelled speculation that the striker could move in the summer, claiming four clubs in England could afford him.
Raiola did not mention any names, but Haaland has been linked with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Norway international has a release clause that would allow clubs to sign him for a relatively modest fee from the summer of 2022. If Dortmund sell him this summer, though, they can command whatever price they want.
That may be dictated by their final position in the Bundesliga. Should they fail to qualify for the Champions League, they may need to sell players to raise funds – and Haaland would presumably be keen to play for a team in Europe’s top competition.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: I keep in touch with Erling Haaland
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he keeps in touch with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but is happy with Manchester United's recruitment model.
As things stand, Dortmund are sixth after 22 games – six points off the Champions League places. They have ground to make up if they are to finish in the top four.
If they do not, then there are fears that Haaland could be on his way out. But Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has denied such an idea.
“There is no disagreement,” Zorc said on Thursday.
“We are happy to have Erling and continue to plan with him. I don’t think he is uncomfortable in Dortmund.
“All those calculations what will happen if we shouldn’t qualify will happen if that is the case.
“But right now is the wrong time. We believe that we will qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season.”
Haaland part of Chelsea spending spree?
One of the main contenders for Haaland’s signature is Chelsea, who splashed the cash last summer and are willing to flex their financial muscles again this year.
Haaland has emerged as one of their main targets and a recent report highlighted their growing confidence.
Chelsea reportedly have a €300m budget for summer transfers. They are willing to set aside a large portion of that in a bid for Haaland.
