Crafty ploy underway as Dortmund look to keep Erling Haaland from Man Utd grasp

Erling Haaland celebrates scoring v Union Berlin

Borussia Dortmund are understood to be trying to convince Erling Haaland to stay at the club until 2023, according to a report.

Haaland is one of the most in-demand players in Europe after his goalscoring exploits over the last few seasons. And his form shows no sign of slowing down this time around with 11 goals in eight games.

His 41-goal haul last season has had a number of clubs looking at the former RB Salzburg star, including Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

United did try to land the forward when he signed for Dortmund, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flew out to meet up with the former Molde man. United though could not get a deal done and Dortmund landed him for just £17.1m.

This summer nobody could lure the 21-year-old away from Borussia Dortmund. BVB made it clear he was staying put for at least one more season, with his contract running until 2024.

But his agent Mino Raiola did insert a release clause of around £68m. That buy-out will be activate in the summer of 2022.

Now though, according to Sport Bild, BVB officials are trying to persuade the Norway international to stay until 2023. And the Bundesliga club have a plan of exactly how to fund the move.

Donny van de Beek's agent is reportedly working tirelessly to secure the Dutchman a move away from Old Trafford, with more updates on Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele, and Edinson Cavani.

Dortmund are said to be prepared to double his wages if he agrees to stay for another 12 months. Haaland is understood to earn around £140,000 at present. But Dortmund are ready to offer him a bumper new 12-month deal.

Puma to help BVB fund Haaland contract

Per the report, Haaland’s equipment contract with Nike expires at the end of the year. And Puma, Dortmund’s kit manufacturer, are said to be willing to help fund a deal to get the striker to stay.

Of course, Haaland’s clause would still be active, unless he agreed to revoke the existing deal. Otherwise the player would have to turn down a transfer if club’s matched his release clause.

It’s unclear the stance that Raiola and Haaland have taken on the proceedings. But, the pair are well aware that his earning potential away from Dortmund is far greater than even the £280,000 a week that BVB and Puma are prepared to put up.

Chelsea reportedly pulled the plug on a transfer for Haaland over the summer when Raiola’s demands were laid out.

The Italian agent wanted wages of €50m a year for his client, around £800,000 a week. While he also wanted an agents fees of €40m, according to Christian Falk.
