Bring on 2012

A year to be proud of

We have now reached the halfway point of the season and there will not be many teams in the Championship happier than Peterborough, despite only being in mid-table.

A rocky run of just one win in nine games looked like dragging us into the relegation scrap that many had predicted, but back-to-back wins over sides in the bottom three has provided Posh fans with the perfect Christmas present.

Whilst the performances themselves have probably not been great in the two wins, firstly over Coventry and then away to Nottingham Forest, Fergie Jnr’s boys have shown a different side to their talents in being able to grind out wins in scrappy matches.

Having not keet a clean sheet all season until the Coventry game, the fact we have now kept two in a row seems like some sort of minor miracle, but with the quality defenders we have there should be many more to come.

Ryan Bennett is a Premier League centre back in the making and his recent performances have only highlighted this – I’m just hoping it’s not as early as January that a top flight club gives him the chance that he deserves.

He is still only 21, yet has played over 175 league games already and shows real maturity for someone who is still learning the game.

His partner at the back, Gabriel Zakuani, has been one of the stars of the season and deserves every bit of credit he is getting at the moment.

This guy played through the pain barrier during the play-offs last May and was absolutely superb in getting us back in the Championship. The fans love his effort and commitment and its obvious that this attitude inspires the other players to give 100% as well.

Also, bringing Joe Lewis back in goal looks like another good decision from Ferguson. Paul Jones wasn’t doing much wrong when he was between the sticks, but Lewis has that bit of class about him and will make the odd save that most keepers in this league probably wouldn’t.

What’s been even more pleasing about these last two games is being able to get maximum points without our captain, Grant McCann.

I must admit being worried when he got injured that we would struggle, he is a top quality player and the most experienced member of our squad.

But the young Manchester United loanees, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Scott Wootton have came in, as has Daniel Kearns and proved worthy replacements.

Despite being nearer to the playoffs than the relegation area, we still shouldn’t be getting carried away with how the first half of the season has gone.

This league can really hurt you and another run like the nine game streak we had recently would put us right into the thick of the relegation fight.

Maybe an addition of a player or two in January would help, just to bolster a squad that is a bit injury hit at the moment and to give one or two a rest after this busy Christmas period.

Certainly a striker would be a welcome signing for the fans. Emile Sinclair just doesn’t quite look up to the task of delivering the goods in this league at the moment.

He just seems to lack that sharpness and extra ability that the Championship requires compared to League One and Two. Fergie usually gets proved right with most things however and continues to play him so maybe we just haven’t seen the best of him out on the pitch yet…

So we maybe halfway through the league season but it is the end of another year and it is one that will live long in the memory for Posh fans.

Darragh MacAnthony, Fergie Jnr and the players deserve massive credit for what they have achieved in 2011 and to be where we are today, looking back to this time last year, is a truly incredible achievement.

2012 looks promising and if it is even half as successful as this year then Posh fans will remain a very happy bunch!
