Buffon regrets missing out on Premier League
Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has said he regrets not ever playing in the Premier League.
The 37-year-old, who has never left Serie A, is expected to hang up his boots and end his 20-plus-year career when his Juventus contract expires in the summer of 2017.
Buffon, who has won the World Cup and won six Serie A titles, is still the Azzurri’s number one and is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, but he has revealed he does regret not experiencing English football.
“I would’ve liked to play in the Premier League, to experience the environment and the atmosphere there is around English football,” the former Parma man told Marca.
“My secret is to have grown up and developed in conjunction with the evolution of the sport.
“I’ve matured, not only in my behaviour, but what keeps me at the top level is the fact that I love the competition and this is an essential aspect of my work.
“When I was young I was a midfielder and in today’s game a good goalkeeper must not only know how to use their hands but also their feet, so they can begin an action or play the ball to the defence.”
