Pato: Not fit enough to play

Manchester United have been linked with moves for Rihad Mahrez, Alexandre Pato and Cristiano Ronaldo as their attacking woes continue.

In a new regular feature, we take a look at the day’s rumours involving United, separating the wheat from the chaff to save you the trouble…

That’s the snappy headline adorning the paper’s online piece about the Red Devils’ supposed interest in the Foxes star.

United did have scouts at The Hawthorns, that much is certainly true. Largely because – as the Daily Mail article goes on to add – the Baggies are United’s next Premier League opponents next Saturday.

But there have been other stories linking the 24-year-old with potential interest from Louis van Gaal. France Football claims initial contact has been made between United and the player, who has told the Leicester website about how happy he is at the club.

It is to be expected. The form both Mahrez and Jamie Vardy have displayed this season is certain to see them linked with top clubs, with Vardy supposedly attracting the interest of Real Madrid just a week or so ago. United’s creative woes make it easy to sell this particular story, similarly to the recent talk of interest in Sadio Mane.

Another attacker to be linked with United is former Brazilian wonderkid Pato.

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at Corinthians from Sao Paulo, with both clubs splitting his £60,000-a-week wages. When that agreement ends in December, neither club wants to keep him. So, of course, the Premier League is the only place he could hope to get that kind of money, despite having done little over recent years to suggest he’d be worth it.

Pato’s name has been mentioned in the same sentence as Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, West Ham United, Barcelona and countless others besides United. He is, perhaps, the kind signing the Hammers might make to hang their Olympic Stadium season ticket sales on, but there’s more chance of Mahrez showing up at Old Trafford than Pato.

Ronaldo on future: ‘You never know’ (Various, including here)

Ronaldo has been at it again…

“You never know” was his response about the possibility of leaving Real Madrid, while saying he will ‘do what makes him happy’.

We’ve been here before. The Portuguese superstar has rarely given a straight answer when the subject of his future is put to him.

“Only God knows the future”, is one of his favourite responses, having used it both as a Manchester United and Real player. To Ronaldo, it’s all part of keeping the focus firmly where it should be – on him.

Of course, he may end up back at United. Just this weekend, Patrice Evra claims Sir Alex Ferguson told him that he was “99 per cent sure” Ronaldo would return. But the former manager also told the Frenchman he’s be at Old Trafford for another five years. Two weeks later, he resigned.

When Ronaldo does leave Madrid – which he surely will, whether it be next summer or not – there will be a scramble for his services. United will probably have more than a passing interest, but so too will PSG. Where will he end up? As CR7 says, God knows. So don’t waste your time worrying about it.
