Ancelotti outlines how Everton cause their own problems at home

Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed by Everton’s latest struggle at home and hinted they may have to go back to basics.

Everton’s home form has been poor in comparison to their record on the road this season. After losing 2-1 to Burnley, Everton have now lost five of their seven home league games in 2021.

Their latest setback meant they missed the chance to put pressure on the sides above them in the race for Europe. It left Ancelotti disappointed – and the coach reflected on why there is a difference in their performances.

He told Sky Sports: “Big disappointment, we lost a great opportunity to climb the table.

“We made the same mistakes we have in games this season at home. We started poorly and were 2-0 down, we tried to get back into the game but it was not enough.

“It was a mistake. We tried to build up and were imbalanced. They were better and strong defensively, they won second balls. This is the reason for the defeat.

“We should have created more. We missed passes and crosses, we missed control and quality.”

Ancelotti then claimed that Everton’s problems lie when they alter their playing style. Hence, he wants them to build from a solid defensive base in future.

“When we try to play with quality we have difficulties. We are strong when we defend properly.

“It is clear at home we were not good enough. We are fantastic away. This season is like this. Next game is at home and we have to do better.”

Ancelotti offers Pickford update

One concern for Everton during the game was the substitution of Jordan Pickford due to injury.

With Robin Olsen unavailable, Ancelotti had to send on 21-year-old goalkeeper Joao Virginia for a Premier League debut.

Virginia did not concede any goals, but Everton will be hoping to have Pickford back soon. Fortunately, Ancelotti thinks it is just a minor issue.

The Toffees boss said of Pickford: “He had the same problem he had before.

“He will have a check on Monday and we will see. It is not a big problem.”
