Carragher explains what Chelsea must still change to challenge for title

Jamie.Carragher TEAMtalk

Jamie Carragher thinks that Chelsea will not challenge for the Premier League unless they change their goalkeeper.

It has been a busy summer at Stamford Bridge in terms of transfers. Chelsea have shown ambition by signing Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.

Malang Sarr has also joined them, although they could loan him out straight away. But the Blues may not even be finished there, with Kai Havertz still well on their agenda.

However, another area they need to strengthen, according to Carragher, is in goal. Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled to live up to his price tag after joining for €80m two years ago.

Reports have linked Chelsea with a number of potential replacements, such as Nick Pope, Edouard Mendy and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

And Carragher thinks making such a change would be essential if Chelsea really want to challenge for the Premier League title.

He told Sky Sports: “They had to buy four players, I get that.

“But I think if Chelsea don’t reinforce in the goalkeeper situation, I don’t see much change for them really in the position that they ended up in.”

Micah Richards, however, is impressed by their activity in the transfer window. He added: “Chelsea are improving their squad. They look like the Avengers, at the moment, don’t they?

“Every time you look, they’ve got a new signing.”

Neville explains reason for Chelsea spending

Meanwhile, Gary Neville understands why Chelsea have spent big this summer, despite impressing without any transfers last season.

Frank Lampard guided them to Champions League qualification, making use of homegrown talent amid a transfer ban.

But rather than continuing with that formula, Chelsea have gone back into the transfer market strongly this summer. And Neville thinks the potential they showed last season is why Roman Abramovich has spent heavily.

He explained: “Roman Abramovich has wanted for 15 years a flamboyant team. I do think what Frank Lampard’s done has invigorated him – the academy players finally coming through, a team that plays a different way, that’s more energetic and quite good to watch, really good to watch.

“More inconsistent, less reliable. You always get that, though, when you’re trying to go with younger players and a different style, but I think that’s what he wants.

“He wants excitement, he wants thrill around Chelsea, and I think that’s why he’s invested this summer, to go again at this moment, because he sees a team that’s got something that I think he’s always wanted.”
