Man Utd urged to replace Anthony Martial with ‘world-class striker’

Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial Man Utd TEAMtalk

Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United to sign a ‘world-class player’ this summer to replace the in-form Anthony Martial.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been in supreme form since the season resumed last month. They beat Aston Villa on Thursday night to close to within one victory of fourth-placed Leicester and third-placed Chelsea.

Martial has endured a mixed time at Old Trafford following his £36million move from Monaco in 2015. Has has scored 68 goals for the club but also experienced spells out of the team.

United’s recent form has raised hope of a title challenge next season, but Carragher doubts Martial can fire the team to the title. And he believes they must invest in another ‘world-class’ forward.

The Red Devils have been heavily tipped to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho in recent months. But his £100m valuation is causing issues.

And former Liverpool and England defender Carragher told Telegraph Sport: “Bruno Fernandes’ impact on United’s front three is cause for excitement.

“Between them, Anthony Martial, Rashford and Greenwood have scored 56 this season. Three more than Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

“That is not insignificant. On their day, the United trio can be devastating.

“But as a whole those statistics are no more relevant to the title race than Fowler and Stan Collymore (55) outscoring Andy Cole and Eric Cantona (32) in 1995-96. Who won the double that season?

“What matters in the Premier League is Liverpool have scored 16 more, conceded seven fewer, and collected 34 more points.

“Liverpool possess an attacking trio that is difficult to improve. Can we say the same of United?

“I think they need another world-class player at the top end of the pitch. Martial’s goal record has improved but I am yet to be convinced he is the man to fire them to a title challenge.”

Scholes claims Liverpool, City will be ‘worrying’ about Man Utd resurgence

Paul Scholes thinks Liverpool and Man City might have to “start worrying” about Man Utd after their resurgence in the second half of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have closed the gap on fourth-placed Leicester to a point. Fifth-placed United go to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season.

And Scholes posted a picture of the Man Utd players celebrating at Villa Park with a caption of “well then”. He reckons Liverpool and City will be worried about United next season. Read more…
