Carragher names Prem star who can take Liverpool on to next level

Liverpool have been urged to make a move to sign James Maddison as he is the only player outside the current top six who could improve their side.

That’s according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, who admits he is seriously impressed by the Leicester No 10 and reckons he could fill the hole left in the Liverpool side by Philippe Coutinho.

The 22-year-old notched up seven goals and seven assists during an impressive debut season for the Foxes last term and has started this season in fine form, despite Brendan Rodgers’ side starting with draws at home to Wolves and at Chelsea.

And after Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool looked into the possibility of re-signing Coutinho this summer before being priced out of a deal, Carragher has suggested England man Maddison as an alternative.

“I think he is the one player outside of the top six who Liverpool should be looking at,” Carragher said. “People have been talking about Coutinho coming back, but obviously that hasn’t happened as he’s gone to Bayern Munich.

“But if you are looking in the Premier League, yes he will cost a lot of money, but he should be the one Liverpool are looking at if you’re going to that next step up.”

His colleague Gary Neville also admitted he was impressed by the former Norwich man, adding: “Maddison is a genuine creative player. I think he is outstanding.

“I think he will be playing for England a lot of times. He will be in the European Championship squad. I think he’s fantastic.”
